The Purpose of the Ziggurats in Ancient Sumer

The Ziggurats of Ancient Sumer were designed to elevate the temples to the gods so that those gods might descend from the heavens. The gods were supposed to ensure the prosperity of the community. It is also believed that by erecting those monuments up this symbolizes the mountains from which their ancestors came from. What is your opinion about those impressive ancient temples?
One of the few remaining in a good conditions is the ziggurat of Ur.

Stonehenge - A Mystery

Prehistoric settlements have appeared in many parts of the world. One of the most significant examples is the old civilization of Egypt; however, I want to point out my attention to Western Europe and more specifically to Great Britain. Stonehenge in Salisbury Plain, England dating back ca. 2900-1400 BCE. is probably the most important monument from prehistoric times. In these early forms of civilization, terms like organization of work, organization of people, teamwork and leadership were still in the early ages of development. Stonehenge required very high organizational skills.
But what was the reason for building Stonehenge? Was that a reason related to ancient rulers showing extra power over a competing civilization? Was that ruler's desire for showing power over others? Was it really built by giants, various magicians, ET, etc? The scientific truth reveals that Stonehenge was actually an observatory for determining the solstices. Still the question that hunts me down is why did the people of the British Isles need the calendar? I am looking for an answer to this question. Stonehenge still remains a mystery.

About This Blog

Through architecture I have been able to perceive the world more thoroughly and have begun to differentiate countries and people. Questions such as how structures concretize a political system’s core social dynamic; how location and government dictate the look of a building; what forces push people to think in a certain way; ways in which space is dictated by power and vice versa provide a starting point for my own designs. I want to introduce to the general public the political potential and design concepts of buildings. This is the reason why I created this blog because it will be an opportunity for me to present something to the general public but also an opportunity to learn from you. I will start posting from discussion of some of the earliest forms of civilization and finish with contemporary buildings.
